While some institutions will stay at least partially online for the 2021-22 academic year, others plan to drop their all-virtual options altogether. University leaders are optimistic about the gradual return to normal, but hedge that it’s not going to be like pre-pandemic college life anytime soon.
In the wake of COVID-19, colleges and universities across the globe have implemented various reopening options in order to resume and continue instruction for the spring 2021 semester, and many are starting to set their sights to the fall with optimism that they will be able to return to normal operations by then.
From a financial standpoint, colleges need to be open. Operating budgets depend on tuition money and schools need students on campus to support resources such as the dining hall and bookstore. While many universities across the US have opened the campus in some capacity for the fall semester with in-person instruction, few are entirely in-person.

Source: AFP Canada’s borders have remained open to international students since last October, so long as their designated learning institution (DLI) has a government-approved COVID-19 readiness plan in place.

The five month rule refers to the termination of a student’s record in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) based on the student being away from classes or not in status for five months.

US Immigration law states that individuals in the US for more than 180 days without a valid status are banned from returning to the US for at least 3 years. Individuals in the US for more than 1 year without a valid status are banned from returning to the US for at least 10 years.
