Will Metal In Eye Come Out On Its Own

We frequently see patients with small pieces of metal lodged in their cornea. Very often these are people who work as machinists, welders, or mechanics. The epithelium, or outer layer of the cornea, is soft and metal fragments easily become stuck within the cornea. There is usually immediate pain when the foreign body gets into the cornea.

Most of these flakes are from metal dust that falls into the eye (ie. the stuff gets stuck in the hair and ends up in the eye later on). These metal pieces really stick to the cornea, and quickly rust and can cause infections if not removed. This metal foreign body in the eye is being removed with an 18 guage needle.

It depends on exactly where the metal in your eye is. If it is just a few small flakes of metal in the anterior stroma of the cornea. The metal particles could be easily removed and heal over is a day’s time.
