Sometimes metal halide ballast kits will list like M90 and H38 on it’s label, if it was designed run both 100W metal halide and 100W mercury vapor lamps, but not always. They do not manufacture “mercury vapor” ballasts anymore, so you would use a metal halide ballast and MH or MV lamp.
H33, H38 are mercury vapor codes with H, M135, M47 are metal halide ANSI with M and HPS ANSI codes have an S, like S55 or S50. Sometimes metal halide ballast kits will list like M90 and H38 on it’s label, if it was designed run both 100W metal halide and 100W mercury vapor lamps, but not always.
All MH lamps 150W and under need a (relatively) high voltage starting pulse. MV does not. So you can put a MV lamp into a MH fixture (why you would want to, I don’t know…) but if you put a

Mercury Vapor Fixture + Metal Halide Lamp = Will It Work
You will may run into some issue with using MV ballast with MH bulbs techally it will work but safety point no.,, unless you have open bulb rated then it will be fine. Perfomace wise the voltage requirement is pretty simuair but not excat the same due the MH require slightly higher voltage to keep it running so you will run into issue during very cold start up in winter time it may not lit up.
Mercury vapor to Metal Halide. – Electrician Talk
They do not manufacture “mercury vapor” ballasts anymore, so you would use a metal halide ballast and MH or MV lamp. On occasion, pairing a 175 MV lamp with a 150W MH ballast, will work, but will cause the ballast to overclock, and will greatly shorten the life of that ballast and/or lamp.

Difference Between Metal Halide and Multi Vapor
Metal halide lamps are a form of the light source that creates light via passing an electric arc through a gaseous mixture of mercury vapor and vapor of some metal halides. Most of the times, the metal halides are compounds containing bromine and iodine as the halide component. Moreover, the most common compound is sodium iodide.
Metal Halide vs High Pressure Sodium – Superior Lighting
Care should also be taken to choose the correct base lamp. Both metal halide bulbs and HPS bulbs are available in medium and mogul base screw in connections. Here we can examine why a metal halide or high pressure sodium light bulb is best choice for you. Benefits of Metal Halide. Metal Halide bulbs produce light by passing electrical currents through a mixture of mercury and metal halide gas to make a white light.

Metal Halide Lights: What are they and how do they work?
A metal halide lamp is a type of HID (high-intensity discharge) lamp. Mercury vapor lamps are also a type of HID lamp. In a nutshell, a MH lamp works when an electrical arc goes through a gaseous mix, creating light. With a metal halide lamp, that mix of gases will normally include mercury, xenon or argon, and a variety of metal halides.
How do metal halide lamps work? | Mid-Wattage Metal Halide | Lighting …
Metal halide (MH) lamps consist of an arc tube (also called a discharge tube or “burner”) within an outer envelope, or bulb. The arc tube may be made of either quartz or ceramic and contains a starting gas (usually argon), mercury, and MH salts. Traditional quartz MH arc tubes are similar in shape to mercury vapor (MV) arc tubes, but they …

Lamp Types: Metal Halide, Sodium Vapor & Mercury Vapor lighting
There are three main types of HID lamps: mercury vapor, metal halide and sodium. The names refer to the elements that are added to the gases in the arc stream which cause each type to have somewhat different color characteristics and overall lamp efficiency. Replacing old outdoor mercury vapor lamp post insides
Just replace the old merc-vapor ballast and capacitor with a new metal-halide one. Make sure the metal-halide ballast doesn’t have an ignitor in it. If it does, see the HPS stuff below. As long as the new lamp is the same wattage or lower, heat won’t be an issue. To go to high pressure soduim (HPS), you need a socket that’s rated for 4 KV pulse.
Mercury-vapor lamp – Wikipedia
A mercury-vapor lamp is a gas-discharge lamp that uses an electric arc through vaporized mercury to produce light. The arc discharge is generally confined to a small fused quartz arc tube mounted within a larger borosilicate glass bulb. The outer bulb may be clear or coated with a phosphor; in either case, the outer bulb provides thermal insulation, protection from the ultraviolet radiation …
