Tipu Sultan, known as the dreaded ’Tiger of Mysore’, was a legend during his lifetime and is still regarded as an enlightened ruler in India. During the late eighteenth century he bitterly and effectively opposed British rule in southern India, posing a grave threat to the East India Company.
Throughout India, Tippu was famously known as the Tiger of Mysore. All his clothing carried the stripes of tiger and the throne upholstery and the cushions in the chamber of his court were all designed with the stripes of tiger. He used a special throne of eight corners that were surmounted by eight tiger heads.
And, this fascination with the animal was the reason for him being called as the “Tiger of Mysore”. However, some historians say that his bravery earned him the name. It is said that after hearing about his bravery, valour and skills, French commander-in-chief Napolean Bonaparte once sought an alliance with him.
He in fact considered tiger as his personal symbol. When he ascended the throne in the year 1782, he made tiger the official symbol of the Mysore state. In all his armours, the image of tiger was engraved or embossed or at least printed.
