The modern Republic of Sudan was formed in 1956 and inherited its boundaries from Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, established in 1899.
The military and civil government of the Sudan was invested in a governor-general appointed by the khedive of Egypt but nominated by the British government. In reality, there was no equal partnership between Britain and Egypt in the Sudan.
Some of the Presidents held an honorary position, such as with President Ismail Al-Azhari, while others exercised total control, as has been the case with President Omar al-Bashir. Ibrahim Abboud became the first head of state of the independent Republic of Sudan in 1958.
Since the fall of Omar al-Bashir, the country has been ruled by the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, made up of both military and civilian representatives as the highest power in the transitional period.
