More than six million visitors a year now flock to enjoy the Albert Dock’s rich variety. New owner Aberdeen Asset Management announces a vision for the future of the Dock’s retail and leisure offer, describing it as a ’one of a kind destination’.

Despite the official opening taking place in 1846, the construction of the Albert Dock was not fully completed until 1847. In 1848, a new dock office was built and the dock itself was upgraded to feature a hydraulic cargo handling hoist system, the first of its kind in the world.

At no time in its history have so many ships berthed at Albert Dock. The bustling docks and their prized cargoes become a target for German bombers, which first drop mines into the water, and then onto its roofs.

One of the greatest maritime cities on earth, 40% of global trade passes through Liverpool’s docks by the beginning of the 19th century. Dock engineer and architect Jesse Hartley has a unique vision for the Albert Dock, building vast warehouses on its quaysides to securely store goods arriving from across the globe.
