How big is Gaza? Gaza is the coastal strip of land ruled by Hamas. The Strip covers approximately 139 square miles. In terms of size, Gaza is comparable to cities like Portland, Oregon, Las Vegas, Detroit, and Philadelphia. Although the area is small, it is incredibly densely populated. Its land mass is smaller than Washington, DC, which is only 500,000 square miles. The population density in Gaza is particularly high, as there are more people living there than in the rest of the United States.

One-tenth of the population lives in Gaza, and one of the challenges to sustaining the population is the lack of basic services. The UN runs 22 hospitals, but many of these facilities were damaged in previous conflicts with Israel. The Israeli government must also approve applications for medical treatment for Gaza patients to enter the West Bank or East Jerusalem. In January 2019, the approval rate was 65%. While the situation is critical in Gaza, a recent outbreak of coronavirus has made matters worse. The virus has caused an alarming number of deaths and over 104,000 cases since the pandemic began.

The population density in Gaza is also a concern. In 1991, the Gaza population was at a record eight children per woman. In contrast, Israel has a fertility rate of three, although this figure is inflated by the higher number of Haredi Jews living in Gaza. Moreover, compared to other global regions, Gaza ranks below New York City and Boston in terms of class size and availability of clean water. It’s no wonder then, that the Palestinian population has become so desperate that they no longer seek birth control.
